TIPS FOR APRIL (Southern Hemisphere)
Now that most of your repotting will be done by now, and most likely finish before we get the very cold weather coming, which is usually around the end of April, keep in mind that you will need some warm weather after repotting to get some root development before winter, it might be a good time to start preparing for the oncoming winter. Consider the needs of your trees.
Most trees will enjoy a lot more sunshine than in the middle of summer, this will keep them in good health and will allow them to dry out more frequently than if kept in a shaded position, avoiding any problems that may occur with roots that remain too wet.
All deciduous trees are best given as much exposure to frost and sunlight as possible in order to maximize Autumn colours, a well trained deciduous bonsai can look fantastic in its dormant phase, so dont be afraid to keep them out on display in prominent positions of your garden.
Be aware of any trees you may have that are sensitive to cold or frost. Figs and other tropicals may tolerate some cold temperatures if in a frost free area. Otherwise, find a nice spot inside with plenty of natural light to keep your tropicals. If you are doing this, it is also beneficial for the trees to have some outside time as much as possible during the nicer days of winter. This will help to avoid the trees weakening due to lack of sunlight, it will reduce drawing and keep your nodes closer together, ie smaller leaves and more compact canopies.
Now may be a good time to build that new glass house you have been thinking of. Or maybe that new display bench, or even monkey poles in a very sunny spot of your garden. Other tasks may include the cleaning of existing benches. Keep removing any fallen leaves and gravel, etc from your benches. Maintaining a clean display area will not only look better, but also reduce the incidence of any unwanted pests.
Needle plucking, or snipping of needles back to the sheath, on pines is generally done at this time of year. This will help sunlight in to generate more buds come spring and summer. The thinning out of foliage on these and other evergreen trees will also help reduce the incidence of unwanted pests nesting among the foliage. Not sure? Ask me how.
